Indians and Settlers found the “Winona Area” excellent for communities. Deep in the  East Texas piney woods in the mid 1800s, land, water, and the natural resources were conducive to prosperity. During the Civil War many of the POW’s of Camp Ford decided to make the area their home.

Gatherings at the Community Center at Starrville or fundraisers for  one of the Volunteer Fire Departments are just examples of the pioneer spirit that still remains. The nine communities that make up the Winona Area have a rich history. But, it is the  future that is knocking at our door.

Tyler (the rose capitol of the world) got most of it’s roses from the sandy soils of the Winona area.

The Rail Road, which now runs through the heart of the area, brought an era of industrial development that remains strong today.

When oil was discovered another industry came to life.  Oil wells and Natural Gas brought people like H.L. Hunt (oil baron) to the area.
