In late 2006, the city council decided to get a new logo designed for the City. This new logo would be painted on the side of the new water tower being constructed, as well as potentially being used on City letterhead and business cards. In early 2007, the City contacted the art teacher for Winona high school, Mrs. Dawn Langley. We wanted to have a contest for the high school students. We decided we would award a monetary prize to the winner, with the winner being chosen by popular vote of the council members and citizens who attended the meeting. We left the design wide open for the students. We did not want to limit their ideas, and we are extremely proud of the results of this contest. We had great participation from the students, and all the submissions were unique and impressive. All submissions were anonymous until after the voting was completed. There were so many great entries that we actually had a tie for first place. We awarded both designs the full first place prize value. We still have to decide if we are going to use just one of the designs, or if we will use the both in different capacities. Both designs will be submitted to a graphic designer, and may be tweaked a bit before final approval. We want to extend our appreciation to the students, staff and administration of Winona ISD. The City enjoys a great partnership with the school. |
